Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers counting on Pepe Reina

Brendan Rodgers has dismissed speculation linking Pepe Reina with a move away from Liverpool by insisting their relationship is strong.

Reports have suggested that Reina could be a summer target for Barcelona, with Victor Valdes expected to leave after announcing that he does not intend to sign a new contract at Camp Nou.

However, Rodgers has stressed that Reina remains a key part of his plans for the future at Anfield, saying he has never had a problem with the 30-year-old.

"I think a lot of the stuff this year has just been based on the speculation that Valdes is going," said the Liverpool manager.

"I am counting on him for next season, yes. He's never been unsettled and our relationship is very strong.
"Pepe and I speak a lot. He's a good man and I've real respect for him."

Rodgers added: "I see him as someone who is going to be here. He is 30 years of age and is someone who looks after his body. The sports science team this year have worked really well with him.
"I think he's been outstanding and had great focus and hopefully that will continue for us."

FA Cup: Chelsea edge out Manchester United to book semi-final spot at Wembley

A spectacular strike from Demba Ba saw FA Cup holders Chelsea to a 1-0 win over Manchester United in their quarter-final replay.
The Blues, who have lifted the trophy in four of the last six seasons, will now face Manchester City at Wembley in the semi-finals - with another fixture added to an already hectic April schedule for Rafa Benitez's side.
Fatigue had been a buzz word prior to kick-off, with the games coming thick and fast at this stage of the season, and a lethargic opening from both sets of players suggested Robin van Persie's pre-match warning not to expect a classic would be proved correct - with misplaced passes and heavy touches the order of the day.
It took over half an hour for the first meaningful effort on goal to be mustered, with Ba forcing David de Gea into a low stop with his feet.
Prior to that, the sight of Ashley Cole failing to keep pace with England colleague Danny Welbeck and subsequently limping off with a hamstring complaint had provided the only talking point for those who had braved the capital cold on Easter Monday.
Things did improve marginally as the afternoon wore on, but David Luiz fired a 25-yard free-kick high into the stands and Nani saw a dipping effort from distance skip off the turf and wide of the target.
Javier Hernandez, a man who has tormented Chelsea on a regular basis in the past, came as close as anyone to forcing a first-half breakthrough shortly before the interval, with Petr Cech sticking out a boot to fend off an ambitious strike which moved wildly in flight.
In a game lacking any real quality, it appeared as though a moment of magic, or possibly madness, would be required to settle the tie, and Ba provided the former on 49 minutes.
Juan Mata teased a hanging ball into the box and, after watching it drop over his shoulder, Chelsea's Senegalese striker swivelled on the slide to send a looping volley over De Gea and into the back of the net.
With the likes of Van Persie, Ryan Giggs, Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres waiting patiently on the bench, and with recent contests between Chelsea and United having produced a flood of goals, you got the feeling that one was unlikely to be enough for the hosts.
Chelsea were, however, by hook or by crook, able to contain United - with Cech producing a remarkable fingertip stop on the hour mark to divert a diving header from Hernandez up and over the crossbar.
Shortly after, Mata was presented with an opportunity to try and double the Blues' advantage, but he took too long to set himself and eventually saw a fierce drive from an ever-tightening angle touched into the side-netting by De Gea.
Eden Hazard then took it upon himself to try and ease the tension around Stamford Bridge but, after bursting through the middle and into the penalty area, he could only slide wide of the post when offered a clear sight of goal.
United were expected to try and finish with a flourish, in an effort to keep their double dreams alive, but they created only one opportunity of note - which Van Persie hammered high into the crowd - and Sir Alex Ferguson's men must look to console themselves with a bid to take the Premier League title with a new record points haul.

Lionel Messi's goal streak hits 19 in draw

Lionel Messi again made history but his goal was not enough to earn Barcelona a win over relegation-threatened Celta Vigo, and Barca settled for a 2-2 draw.
Denis Doyle/Getty Images Lionel Messi celebrates after scoring for Barcelona in his 19th straight La Liga match on Saturday.
Messi is no stranger to treading new ground and his 73rd-minute goal Saturday meant he has scored in 19 successive La Liga matches.
In doing so he has found the net against every other side in the competition -- the first player to ever do that in consecutive matches -- and he has 29 goals in his past 19 games.
Saturday's goal would not be the winner, though, with Borja Oubina's late header earning Celta a point, and Naxto Insa's opener having been earlier scrubbed out by Cristian Tello's goal.
It was a good day for Barca, however, with Messi's latest record being set and Eric Abidal on the bench for the first time since a liver transplant over a year ago.
The France defender did not make it on to the field but his return is a significant one, as is that of coach Tito Vilanova who was not at the game but is back in the country after undergoing chemotherapy in the United States.
He will have been relatively pleased with his side, too, although Barcelona was a little off the pace to start with as Celta, which remains in the bottom three, did all the running.
Augusto Fernandez's shot was tipped around the post by Jose Pinto and with 38 minutes gone Insa put the home side ahead, slotting in from close range after a smart cross from Fabian Orellana.
Barca would level before the break, though, with Tello being played in down the left by Messi and opening his body before curling a shot across the body of Javi Varas and in to the far corner.
In between times, both sides had seen penalty appeals turned down, with Messi and Chu-Young Park both claiming to have been tripped, but both were waved away.
Messi would have an impact after the interval, having a shot smartly saved by Varas and then securing another piece of history with 17 minutes left.
The first goal was reversed, with Tello pulling back from the left and Messi arriving just in time to convert.
It would not secure the points, though, with Oubina's looping header off Fabian Orellana's 88th-minute cross and levelling things up.

Struggling Sunderland axe O'Neill

Sunderland have confirmed they have "parted company" with manager Martin O'Neill after Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Manchester United, left the club 16th in the Premier League table.

A statement on the Wearsiders' official website said: "Sunderland AFC has announced that it has parted company with manager Martin O'Neill this evening.
"The club would like to place on record its thanks to Martin and wishes him well for the future. An announcement will be made in the coming days regarding a successor."
O'Neill, 61, took the reins at the Stadium of Light in December 2011 and guided the Wearsiders out of the bottom three and to a 13th-placed finish in the Premier League last season.
However, with Sunderland winless in eight games and currently just one point above the relegation zone, the club have acted to try and improve their fortunes in what has the makings of one of the most fiercely contested relegation battles in years.
The Wearsiders face tricky visits to European champions Chelsea and North East rivals Newcastle United in their next two games.
Former England boss Steve McClaren has emerged as the early bookies' favourite to replace O'Neill, with Paolo Di Canio, Roberto Di Matteo and Mark Hughes also among the rumoured contenders.
